Views on Generational Trust & Generosity

Looks like students and millennials have less faith in people. See more findings on college students’ aspirations and expectations over at the Society Pages. For example: students generally have higher demands on the world, and they are more likely than workers to say it is important or essential to have a prestigious career with which they can make an impact, but wealth is less important than prestige or impact.

Not sure how this jibes with the narrative of more young people taking an interest in public service (e.g. TFA, Americorp, etc.).

On a broader, more significant level: This story has been a slow-moving one, and it shouldn’t have taken someone wondering around campus in a KKK hood to attract mainstream media attention to the many other incidents of hate speech crimes that were committed on Oberlin’s campus in February.

The college paper, the Review, has an incident tracker here. There is also a blog that has been set up by some community members that is worth a follow for anyone interested in this story.

As a trade reporter covering digital media, I rarely get “scoops.” (especially at 9pm on a Monday night!) While that’s a currency for better, more accomplished reporters, I tend to write more in-the-weeds type stories. But I actually got a nice little scoop here.

There was a time when putting ads on the front page of newspapers was considered risque. Those are over. The Washington Post became the latest publisher to quit worrying and learn to love sponsored content.

WaPo tomorrow plans to launch “BrandConnect” that will let marketers create content throughout the WaPo site and on its homepage. It’s kind of like Forbes’ BrandVoice, which lets brands post on the Forbes platform. CTIA, the wireless trade association, is the inaugural advertiser and will create content through blog posts, videos and infographics, according to a rep. The Post did not provide specifics on exact nature of the content or how long it would run.

As a sign of how important it views this, the Post is giving the sponsored content prime real estate along the left rail of its homepage.

The framing of even straight new reports feels just a little bit jaded, as if veteran reporters just can’t bring themselves to pretend one more time that climate change is a hoax, Benghazi is a scandal, and federal spending is spiraling out of control. After more than four years of work from volunteers and a full-time team here at Sunlight we’re immensely proud to launch the full Open States site with searchable legislative data for all 50 states, D.C. and Puerto Rico. Open States is the only comprehensive database of activities from all state capitols that makes it easy to find your state lawmaker, review their votes, search for legislation, track bills and much more.

If you watch the video one of the important points of tracking the legislative data is that laws and such often flow up from the state to federal level rather than the other way around.

Consider it an early warning system of a type.

Data is available on the Open States Web site, through APIs and through bulk downloads.

Joshua sometimes does his homework at a McDonald’s restaurant—not because he is drawn by the burgers, but because the fast-food chain is one of the few places in this southern Alabama city of 4,000 where he can get online access free once the public library closes.

Cheap smartphones and tablets have put Web-ready technology into more hands than ever. But the price of Internet connectivity hasn’t come down nearly as quickly. And in many rural areas, high-speed Internet through traditional phone lines simply isn’t available at any price. The result is a divide between families that have broadband constantly available on their home computers and phones, and those that have to plan their days around visits to free sources of Internet access.

That divide is becoming a bigger problem now that a fast Internet connection has evolved into an essential tool for completing many assignments at public schools. Federal regulators identified the gap in home Internet access as a key challenge for education in a report in 2010. Access to the Web has expanded since then, but roughly a third of households with income of less than $30,000 a year and teens living at home still don’t have broadband access there, according to the Pew Research Center.

An important reminder that even as far as technology has come, for many, students especially, the digital divide is still very much real.
